The weather has started to warm up here in Denver. That means that more and more people are beginning to prepare their backyards for family BBQs and cold beers with friends. With May quickly approaching, we can’t help but get excited about Cinco de Mayo and the festivities that come with it.
Here at ParkDIA, we like to do things big. With Cinco de Mayo coming up, we’re wondering where in the world we should go to celebrate. It goes without saying that a trip to Mexico would be the best option, but when your passport is expired, or you need a closer trip, there are still a handful of options to take advantage of.
In today’s blog post, we are going to touch on some of the best places to visit for the ultimate Cinco de Mayo festivities. So, if you take this holiday seriously or you’re wanting to get out of town now that the weather has been great, check out the list of places below, and book your flight today.
Albuquerque, New Mexico
It might not be Mexico, but the Hispanic culture is extremely prominent when visiting this state. On Cinco de Mayo, you can count on there being incredible celebrations throughout the town. When you’re looking for authentic Mexican cuisine, an entertaining celebration, and a good time, New Mexico is definitely somewhere to consider visiting. Aside from that, you’re also going to be able to enjoy some warmer weather than we get here in Denver.
Phoenix, Arizona
Another state that is known for having some prominent Hispanic culture is Phoenix. Just a short flight away, Phoenix, Arizona, celebrates Cinco de Mayo across the town. While you can definitely count on finding a fun celebration downtown, it’s easy to hop from place to place if you’re looking for a variety of ways to enjoy the day. The Cinco de Mayo festival is one of the largest held in the state of Arizona, so you know that it’s going to be great. And on top of it all, you get to escape to some warm weather.
San Antonio, Texas
Okay, yet another third place with warm weather, and we are not mad about it. San Antonio, Texas, is a fantastic place to head to for Cinco de Mayo, and the warm weather isn’t the only reason. San Antonio hosts a huge festival each year with endless Mexican food, live music, dancing, and so much more. Stop down by Market Square to get involved with these festivities.
One of the reasons that we love the idea of visiting San Antonia during Cinco de Mayo is that the Market Square puts on celebrations on a monthly basis. It’s as if Cinco de Mayo happens every month when you’re visiting. That being said, you can only imagine the energy and efforts that are made when Cinco de Mayo comes around.
San Francisco, California
California is another state that has some incredible Hispanic culture, and it shows on Cinco de Mayo. A neighborhood called “The Mission” takes pride in the efforts that they make on Cinco de Mayo. With cultural activities, live music, health screenings, tasty food, and the like, you know that you’re going to have a great time here. One of the factors that really sold us on this location are the Lucha Libre wrestlers that they have. What a great experience that would be.
Portland, Oregon
It might not be the first city that comes to mind when you think of Cinco de Mayo, but it is, in fact, one of the best locations to spend the holiday. Tom McCall Waterfront Park is buzzing with laughter and live music while people gather to celebrate. Aside from the energy, you can enjoy delicious music and a fun carnival that incorporates cultural activities for you to enjoy.
Chicago, Illinois
Again, this might not be a place that first comes to mind when you think about celebrating Cinco de Mayo, but Chicago does not mess around when it comes to ensuring that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated. If you choose to visit Chicago during Cinco de Mayo, you will get to enjoy their annual three-day festival! Head on down to Little Village where you will get to partake in a colorful parade, live music and, of course, endless Mexican cuisine and drinks.
Los Angeles, California
Another town in California that is known for hosting incredible Cinco de Mayo festivities is Los Angeles. With over 50 percent of the Los Angeles population being Hispanic, it’s not too much of a surprise that such an amazing event is held. That being said, this might be the perfect place to visit if you’re not able to celebrate on May 5th. You see, in Los Angeles, the celebration actually happens the last week in April.
Fiesta Broadway will have a large parade, tons of music, bright colors, dancing, and so much more. So, if you have plans on the actual Cinco de Mayo, you might as well book your flight to Los Angeles and celebrate twice.
