In today’s blog post, we want to touch a little bit more on our favorite part of a meal: the sweets. Tiramisu

Coffee and dessert combined into one, tiramisu is definitely a dessert that needs to be tried if you’re ever visiting Italy. This sweet treat has a little bit of everything in it! The ladyfingers bring the rich flavor of coffee while the sweet cream contrasts beautifully. All in all, this is a dessert that you are sure to love.

Gelato

Ice cream is a fan favorite, but there is nothing like the gelato stands that you’ll come across when visiting Italy. With countless flavors to choose from, you could indulge in some gelato a couple of times each day and still not try them all! This is a fantastic treat to enjoy when temperatures are a little bit higher, or you’re just walking through the town enjoying the views. Believe us, you are going to fall in love with this dessert the moment you get the chance.

Pavlova

One of the most popular desserts in Australia is pavlova. This meringue-based cake is named after the Russian ballerina. With a light, crisp crust and a soft inside, this is a dessert that has something for everyone. More often than not, this dessert is topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit. All in all, it’s a light dessert with so much to offer.

Basbousa

When traveling throughout the Middle East, you are sure to come across a dessert called Basbousa. This sweet treat is primarily associated with Egypt. To put it simply, this is a simple cake that, once it has been baked, is soaked in sweet syrup. It’s something that requires very few ingredients to create a memorable flavor. The four staple ingredients are eggs, butter, coconut, and semolina. Some of the more experimental recipes will incorporate orange blossom or rose water for a unique flavor.

Maple Taffy

You can probably guess which country maple taffy originates from. Yes, that’s right: Canada! As you may know, Canada is well-known for creating and distributing some of the best maple syrup in the world, but you better believe that’s not the only thing that they’re making with all this fresh maple. Maple taffy is an incredibly simple sweet treat to enjoy and make. All you really need is maple syrup and some means of cooling. Simply place some popsicle sticks on a plate, pour maple syrup over one end, and put them in the cooler to chill. Give them a couple of minutes, and you have some delicious maple taffy to enjoy.

Baklava

A well-known dessert both in Turkey and in the states is Baklava. The exact origin of this dessert is still relatively unknown, but it’s believed to have been around since the 8th century BC. Ultimately, this is a tasty pastry made from thin layers of phyllo dough. In between each layer, there are chopped nuts that have been soaked in honey or syrup. It may sound like a unique dessert to try, but it’s loved enough to have remained a staple in various cultures, and you’ll know why the minute you decide to try it.

Tres Leches Cake

Another dessert that we see quite a bit of in the US is the Tres Leches Cake. This is a popular dessert in Mexico but can take some getting used to if you’ve never tried it before. The spongy cake incorporates three different types of dairy into its recipe: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream. The spongy cake soaks up the various forms of dairy, leaving you with a sweet and one-of-a-kind cake.

Tangyuan

If you are a fan of dumplings, then you absolutely need to try Tangyuan. This sweet treat is popular in China and can be found year round. That being said, Tangyuan is always a part of the Chinese New Year spread, most commonly on the 15th day of the Chinese New Year. The special thing about this particular dessert is that there’s no one filling that you can anticipate. The sweet dumplings are filled with anything. Some of the more common fillings include red bean, peanut, or black sesame. They can also be served as a stand-alone dumpling. Either way, they are rolled in syrup and boiled, which is what creates that sweet taste that makes them a desirable treat.
