What You Should Know About TSA PreCheck

Frequent travelers all over the nation have used TSA (Transportation Security Administration) PreCheck to expedite and streamline their airport experience. But what exactly does a TSA PreCheck get you?

TSA PreCheck began in October 2011 as a government-sponsored program that grants certain approved passengers on domestic flights (and some international flights) expedited security screening. Currently, there are more than four million members enrolled in the program.

When you enroll in PreCheck approval, you are granted expedited passage through airport security and numerous airport across the United States. This ultimately means that you can quickly pass through an airport security line without having to take off your shoes, belt, jacket, or remove any electronics or liquids from your bag. According to the TSA, it takes the average PreCheck traveler less than five minutes to pass through airport security.

If you live in Colorado, this means you can take advantage of TSA PreCheck at:

  • The Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • The Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (ASE)
  • The Colorado Springs Airport (COS)
  • The Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE)

Who Is Eligible For TSA PreCheck?

If you wish to apply for TSA PreCheck, you must be able to prove that you are a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident. If you provide the TSA team with false information on your application or you violate transportation security regulations, it may disqualify you from obtaining a membership.

How Do I Apply For TSA PreCheck?

If you are interested in applying for TSA PreCheck, you must apply online for pre-approval. As soon as you are pre-approved, you’ll be asked to schedule an appointment for a required ten minute interview. This will include a background check and in-person fingerprinting. The cost to enroll in TSA PreCheck is $85. Once you are officially enrolled in the program, you’ll get what is called a “known traveler number”, which you’ll use each time you book an airline ticket. All TSA PreCheck memberships are valid for five years.

Can My Kids Come With Me Through TSA PreCheck?

Many parents wonder whether or not their children can join them through the TSA PreCheck process. The answer is yes, as long as your children are under the age of 12. If any travelers in your group are 13 or older, they will be required to pass through the regular security line at the airport.

Can I Use TSA PreCheck For International Travel?

No. Because TSA PreCheck is a program put on by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, the benefits only affect domestic departures where TSA agents have jurisdiction. It’s important to note that this can include departures from the United States to foreign countries (on participating airlines only).

How Do I Know If I Can Use TSA PreCheck On An Upcoming Flight?

If you have a trip coming up, you may be wondering whether or not you can use your TSA PreCheck status at the airport. All participating TSA PreCheck airlines will indicate on your boarding pass whether or not your trip is eligible. You may see the following printed on your boarding pass, indicating you can take advantage of expedited security lines:

  • TSAPRECHECK
  • TSA PRE
  • TSA Pre✓
