Get Some Shut-Eye At The Airport With These Tips

Sleeping at the airport can be a challenge. Whether your flight has been delayed, your seat gets bumped, or you have an overnight layover, there are a few things you can do to help you get some shuteye at the airport.

Do Your Research

As a flyer, you already know that no two airports are created equal. That’s why it’s important to do your research ahead of time, so you know where to go when it comes time to settle down and take a nap. While most airports stay open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, smaller airports or specific terminals may shut down at night. You should check the airport’s website or call an agent to check the hours if you are unsure.

It can also be beneficial to check the weather to ensure there are no upcoming rain storms, hurricanes, or snow storms the day of your flight.

Dress In Layers

When it comes to traveling, layers are your best friend. Layers will help you dress for weather changes during your trip, ensuring you’re ready for whatever climate comes your way. They will also come in handy when you’re trying to take a nap at the airport and the air conditioner is cranked all the way up. To choose the best layers to bring on your trip, follow the steps below:

  • Choose your base layer. This could be a t-shirt, tank top, or athletic undershirt.
  • Choose clothes that will wick away moisture and keep your skin dry and comfortable.
  • Pick a middle layer. Also called the insulation layer, the middle layer of clothing will go on top of your base layer. The main function of this layer is to keep you warm and to transport moisture and excess heat away from your body.
  • Find a top layer. This layer should protect you from the elements, so we recommend finding a waterproof or windproof top.

Find A Safe Space 

Did you know that some airports offer designated sleeping zones for their flyers? From pay-per-use sleep pods to mini rooms and lounge areas, make sure to ask airport personnel if any of these options are available. If not, you may have to find a safe space somewhere in a waiting area or on the floor.

Whether you’re traveling solo, with family, or with a few friends, it’s always good to know where security is when you start scouting out a place to rest. Take some time to walk around the airport and look for the security office or video cameras, and find a nice spot that you feel is well protected. Keep Your Bags & Valuables Close

When you settle down for a nap at the airport, be sure to keep your bags and any valuables nearby. You can use your purse or satchel as a pillow or footrest, or you can strap your backpack around your arm so it’s not easy to tamper with. If you’re not comfortable keeping all of your belongings nearby, ask the airport personnel if they offer luggage lockers that you can use.

Set An Alarm On Your Phone

To make sure you don’t miss your next flight, set an alarm on your phone. Make sure that your phone is fully charged, and set the alarm to go off about 30 minutes before your scheduled boarding time. You’ll want some time to wake up, grab a cup of coffee, and get oriented before your next flight.
