Planning A Trip With The Seasons

Planning A Trip With The Seasons

When you’re planning a holiday getaway, the seasons may seem to make the destination obvious. Summer means the beach; winter means skiing. But did you know that you can save money by switching the season you visit in? In this blog, ParkDIA is going to discuss the best places to visit during each season so you can plan your vacation to take advantage of the time of year.

Spring

Most Common Destination: Beaches, National Parks

Off-Season Destination: Cities

With spring break around the corner and the world starting to warm back up on the northern hemisphere, is it any wonder that the beaches are going to be packed for the season? Further, springtime is when camping starts to get comfortable again, with parks being in full bloom again for the spring. It makes these prime locations for students on spring break and outdoorsy people to get back into the wild.

Now, if you want to avoid the crowd, then spring is the perfect time to visit bigger cities. With everyone heading to the beaches and out to nature, there are typically very low numbers of tourists in cities (unless that have a big annual event, like Mardi Gras in New Orleans). If you wanted to visit a big city like New York, Paris, or Florence, then spring is the best season to avoid the crowds.

Summer

Most Common Destination: Beaches, Theme Parks

Off-Season Destination: Mountains

Much like the spring, summer is time for the beach. The ocean is finally warm enough to swim in, there are long days to enjoy on the beach, and school is out, giving everyone time off to enjoy the season. That time off for summer vacation also makes it a great time for families to pay a visit to big theme parks, like Disney, Universal, and Six Flags. It’s also when most parks will open their new attractions.

If you want to take advantage of the off-season, then go visit the mountains or somewhere closer to the poles. Most people visit the mountains for skiing and snowboarding, but as most Coloradans know, ski resorts often have trails open during the off-season for hiking and biking. As long as you avoid bigger parks like Yellowstone and Yosemite, you’ll likely have a lot of the park to yourself.

Fall

Most Common Destination: Cities

Off-Season Destination: Beaches

Fall is the time when some are going back to school. It’s also when people are traveling to cities as part of study abroad or for last-minute visits before moves. If you’re a people watcher and excited to see a city full of life, then the fall is the best time to visit if you don’t mind the crowds.

Fall is the off-season for beaches, and there’s a reason why that you’ll want to consider before committing to visiting during this season. Fall is hurricane season for the coast. So, while you may be able to get cheaper flights and likely have the beach to yourself, we want you to understand the potential risks of traveling during this time of year.

Winter

Most Common Destination: Mountains

Off-Season Destination: Theme Parks

Winter is the perfect time to hit the slopes for winter wonderlands in the mountains. With fresh coats of powder, it’s no surprise that the most popular destinations are ski resorts for skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling.

In Colorado though, it’s not hard to take advantage of the mountains in the winter, and with tourists rushing in for the start of the ski season, you may want to avoid the crowd. If you’re looking for somewhere that won’t be crowded, then you should visit theme parks. True, it may be colder waiting in lines, but winter is when most people aren’t visiting these theme parks. Parks will often close rides for maintenance during the winter. If you want the park to yourself, make plans to visit in the winter.
