Did you know that when you’re in the air, you lose out on a third of your taste buds? If you’ve ever thought that the snacks your munching on or the beverages you’re sipping on are lacking in flavor, it’s not just your mind that’s telling you that. Your tastebuds are actually only communicating a portion of what they’re taking in. This is also one of the reasons that people crave some of those bolder flavors when they are on a flight.

Airplane Air Is Really Dry
Here in Denver, we are plenty accustomed to dry air. Even though that may be the case, you’ve probably made a note of how dry the air on the airplane is. It quickly dries out your throat, even when you’re not falling asleep with your mouth open. That is because of the pressurized air in the cabin of the plane. This air is actually below 20 percent humidity.
Even during the coldest months of the year, Colorado experiences higher levels of humidity than this! Some of the lowest humidity levels in Colorado range between 32 to 38 percent, which is nearly 20 percent more than the pressurized air in the cabin. No wonder it feels so dry!
Your Body Loses Water
While we’re on the topic of how dry the cabin of the plane is, let’s talk a little bit about the fact that your body loses moisture while on the plane. Believe it or not, you lose eight ounces of water every hour that you are on the flight. So as much as you may hate the tiny bathrooms on the airplane, it’s pretty essential for you to hydrate during your flight. Especially if you’re traveling long distances.
That being said, if you’re going to be indulging in a few alcoholic beverages, make sure that you’re hydrating extra. When you consider the amount of water that you’re losing from simply being on the plane and add in the factor that you’re consuming alcohol, you’re setting yourself up for a hangover. No wonder it’s so easy for people to catch a buzz while they’re in the air.
The Sky is Full of People
As we mentioned earlier, flying is now the fastest way for you to get to your final destination. It’s no wonder that this is one of the most common means of travel these days. While you may recognize that this is a common mode of transportation and fully understand that every individual in the security line is heading to a flight, it might surprise you to hear how many people and planes are actually in the air at any given moment.
On average, there are roughly 9,700 different planes in the sky. Now, those planes are obviously varying in sizes and range in the number of passengers that they can carry. It is said, however, that there are roughly 1.2 million people in the sky at any given moment. That means that a little more than the entire population of Rhode Island is in the air right, now!
